He had to drive through the field on Wednesday night, but if there was any doubt that the Shark Racing No. 1S team of Logan Schuchart having what it takes to contend this season, he slammed the door on it.
Schuchart came from 13th, moving is way through the field and emerging as a late threat to take Wednesday night’s All Star Circuit of Champions feature at Volusia Speedway Park, beating Donny Schatz and Brad Sweet on the first night of action from the Florida race track.
“There was definitely a lot of back-and-forth there,” Schuchart said after the race on the FloRacing broadcast. “It took some quick reactions times to make some stuff happen. It was kind of just waiting on the direction they were going to take and just going the opposite.”
It sounds like a simple formula, but Schuchart was methodical in his race to the top.
He emerged into third-place a bit earlier, but restarted behind Sweet and Schatz with six laps remaining.
Schuchart made the run on the outside to Sweet, and then threw a slider later to take the lead and drive away from Schatz.
It was his second straight DIRTCar Nationals victory, dating back to last season when he won the final night of action from the event.
“When you feel really good like that it’s just confidence in the drivers mind to be able to race around and know what you’re going to do,” Schuchart said on the broadcast.
David Gravel and Brent Marks rounded out the top five on Wednesday while Tyler Courtney rattled off another solid night to take sixth from P12.
The action continues for Night 2 on Thursday in the final race ahead of the World of Outlaws season opener. Fans can expect hot laps to kick off around 4:30 p.m. CT once again on FloRacing.
