Ricky Thornton Jr. has had himself a decent speedweeks in the Sunshine State, but it got a lot better on Monday night.

The Iowa product earned his first super late model win of the season at Volusia Speedway Park on Monday night in a DIRTCar Racing sanctioned event.

“I kind of got to traffic and didn’t know how hard I needed (to drive),” Thornton Jr. said on the broadcast. “It’s huge. We’ve had a really good speedweeks, but the driver keeps throwing it away.”

But the driver didn’t do that Monday.

Thornton Jr. earned the race win by five seconds over the rest of the field, cruising to victory in the warmup race.

Behind him, Chris Madden emerged as the runner-up finisher and Devin Moran rounded out the podium. They had no parts of Thornton Jr.’s No. 20RT, however.

“My little boy told me to go get my gator, so we went and got it,” Thornton Jr. said.

They’ll be back for one more night of racing before the World of Outlaws Late Model tour officially resumes with points racing on Wednesday night.
