Usually, the news people get in the middle of the night is the type of stuff that ends up bad. For Marshalltown, Iowa’s Ryan Gustin, though, Tuesday night couldn’t have gone any better.
Just passed 2:00 a.m. in Volusia, Gustin captured one of the biggest wins in his racing career.
The driver of the No. 19 outran Brandon Sheppard and Tim McCreadie – the defending champions of the national late model tours – to capture his first win against the best of the best in the sport.
Gustin dedicated the moment to his longtime friend and sponsor, Leon Ramirez.
“This one right here is for Leon Ramirez,” Gustin said. “He was a very good friend, a great sponsor, and this one’s for the whole Ramirez family. I wanted to win one really bad for them, and we did it. Hopefully, we can keep on doing it.”
He’ll get a few chances to keep doing it through the end of the week.
The World of Outlaws Late Models, under its new CASE Construction banner, will race on four straight days to round out the rest of the week at Volusia.
It starts with the first of four nights at the track, with the broadcast coming on DirtVision, that will wrap up the late model’s Southeast February run.
