Chip Ganassi Racing is picking up its option on defending IndyCar champion Alex Palou.

The team announced in a press release Wednesday that the one-year option on Palou’s contract would be exercised for 2023 before a potential expansion is agreed upon.

“Alex’s track record speaks for itself,” Team Owner Chip Ganassi said. “He’s a proven champion and one of the most formidable drivers in the world. We are very excited to continue working together.”

Palou is in his third, full-time season in IndyCar and second driving for Chip Ganassi Racing.

He’s collected three wins and 13 podiums during his short career thus far in IndyCar, along with the series title in his sophomore year.

“It’s a great feeling knowing I’ll be back with Chip Ganassi Racing next season,” Palou said in the release. “The team welcomed me with open arms from day one, and I’m excited to continue working with Chip, Mike Hull, the folks on the No. 10 NTT DATA car and everyone within the organization. The goals remain the same and we will continue to work relentlessly towards achieving them.”

Palou currently sits in fourth in the NTT IndyCar Series points standings going into the tour’s next race.

The series races next on Sunday at Toronto (2:00 p.m. CT Peacock) before a weekend doubleheader on the ensuing Saturday and Sunday at Iowa Speedway.
