The Capitani Classic at Knoxville Raceway is sprint car racing’s version of the Budweiser Shootout, that preludes the Knoxville Nationals – a race that’s as prestigious as Daytona.
Although it was more of an exhibition, Logan Schuchart and Donny Schatz looked like they were racing for Saturday.
The Shark Racing No. 1S held off a charging Schatz in a five-lap shootout after a caution tightened the cars back up late in the race.
Schuchart nearly met turmoil before that, when Brady Bacon stumbled on the backstretch.
At the end of the night, though, all was good for Schuchart and he took home the $9,000 winner’s check for the exhibition event.
The race did pay Knoxville Cup Championship points – Aaron Reutzel rounded out the podium and took over the points lead, previously held by Brian Brown. The pair are separated by 85 points going into the weekly championship that will take place at the end of August.
The final race before the 61st Knoxville Nationals kick off Wednesday happens on Monday with the annual Front Row Challenge at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa. Kyle Larson is the defending winner and plans to be back to defend his crown. The race can be seen on FloRacing.
