Kyle Larson and Brad Sweet debuted their new High Limit Sprint Car Series with Buddy Kofoid taking the win in the tour’s kickoff event Tuesday night at Putnamville, Indiana’s Lincoln Park Speedway.
The 20-year old rose up to the high line later on in the race to speed around the field and pass for the lead in the final 10 laps in route to victory lane, cashing in on a $23,633 winners check.
“I figured I was running around the bottom and it was so dirty up (on the high line),” Kofoid said. “I didn’t want to be the first to move up there to try and clean it off because I feel like I would lose spots doing that. I didn’t show anyone that (the top of the race track) came in, at first.”
Kofoid attributed that move as the reason he won the race.
Justin Sanders and Cory Eliason ended the race on the podium with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. finishing fourth and Zeb Wise rounding out the top five.
“Kyle and Brad have done an awesome job with this new series,” Kofoid said on the broadcast. “It’s a lot of fun and hopefully we can come here again in a winged car.”
Larson, who finished P10 in the race, offered a bounty to those who finished in front of him worth an equal spit of $10,000. The $1,111 was added to Kofoid’s original $22,522 check.
The race also paid out $1500 just to make it to the A-Main, a move that fans could anticipate with racers turning promoters – additional purse money.
Sweet and Larson’s new series utilized a format that mirrors the World of Outlaws’ in its first race. Drivers qualified in one flight and lined up on their best-lap time in heat races. The top two finishers in each heat race went to a dash to determine the polesitter and first four rows of the starting lineup.
The new series has not released a plethora of information for the 2023 season just yet, but FloRacing will be hosting the broadcast of all 12 events planned for the year. Each race will pay $1,000-to-start and a pair of races are handing out $50,000-to-win.
The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series and its full-time, platinum member drivers held a meeting at Knoxville over Nationals weekend, where it is believed the High Limit Series was discussed. Nothing has come out of the meeting thus far that we are able to report.
