In one of the toughest pound-for-pound fields the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series has ever seen, Brad Sweet has figured out how to conquer it.

The two-time and defending champion has kicked off the season by winning five of the tour’s opening 11 races.

“I don’t know, I feel like everyone thought we were still the underdogs,” Sweet said on the DirtVision broadcast. “Maybe they’ll start giving us credit.”

Sweet lead all 40 laps of the main event on Saturday, taking nearly a 3-second lead over the field at one point in the show.

It’s the Kasey Kahne Racing driver’s fourth straight victory in the series.

“They’re the guys to beat right now and we’re all chasing them,” Sheldon Haudenschild said on the broadcast.

The driver of the No. 17 piloted his car to the front and up to the runner-up spot, but never got close enough to Sweet to make a move for the lead.

Gio Scelzi rounded out the podium with a third-place finish, after battling with Logan Schuchart to hold off the final spot of the top three.

“Man, I ran as hard as I could for 40 laps,” Scelzi said on DirtVision. “Sheldon blasted it around me. He was just better than me. I think we were a third-place car and driver tonight. It’s just relieving honestly to have a solid run. It feels like forever since I’ve been up here in Volusia.”

The No. 18 KCP Racing team had to change two engines over the weekend in Missouri.

It paid off for them seeing their new driver for the 2021 season grab another podium.

“I mean one thing is that no one works harder than (our team),” Scelzi said. “It’s a huge group of guys and no matter how bad we suck, I never dread getting a phone call from them.”

James McFadden picked up the hard charger award rounding out the top five and Kraig Kinser grabbed his fifth top 10 finish of the season.

The World of Outlaws Sprint Cars will return to the track next weekend, as they head to Kokomo for a pair of races on Friday and Saturday night. As always, all of the action can be seen live on DirtVision.com.
