Brandon Sheppard had a commanding lead on the field during the Preliminary night of the inaugural Hawkeye 100 Weekend. He was looking for his first win of the season and trying to break a 12-race winless streak to start the season.
Alas, Cade Dillard had something to say about it.
The driver of the No. 97 passed Sheppard in the final 10 laps, sliding up onto the inside of turns 3 and 4 to make the pass for the prelim night points win.
“We had a really good car during that first feature,” Dillard said. “It definitely helps in points. We’re pretty far back there. We were just trying to go out and get wins. Just to compete with these guys in general is really tough. We’re not as consistent as we want to be, but we’ll get there.”
The field was originally scheduled to run split feature races that wouldn’t contribute to World of Outlaws series points.
However, due to just 24 late models showing up to race – with the Lucas Oil Late Model Series running elsewhere – they decided to run all of the cars in each race.
The first feature counted towards World of Outlaws points – where the points leader in Sheppard finished in the runner-up position.
The second feature, however, did not. Qualifying and each feature counted toward compiling the lineups for Saturday’s heat races.
Billy Moyer was the top point man.
“It’s always good to start on the front, so we’re happy about that,” Moyer said. “I think the track is going to be knee-deep in mud tomorrow night, so I don’t know if the first heat is a good place to be or not. The front row definitely is.”
Moyer will start at the point for heat 1, along with Dillard in heat 2 and Frank Heckenast Jr. in heat 3.
Saturday’s action is scheduled to start with hot laps at 5:30 p.m. CT. As always, all of the action can be seen live on DirtVision and ARD will have full coverage.
