Saturday night’s Hawkeye 100 feature race will look a little different than a normal World of Outlaws Late Model race.

After heat races set the lineup, drivers will get ready to kick things off with a three-wide, Indianapolis 500-style start – the first of its kind in series history.

Drivers have mixed opinions on it.

“If everybody runs 100 laps… they’ve just got to be smart about it and mind their P’s and Q’s,” High point man Billy Moyer said on Friday. “I think we’ve got our car pretty close. There’s 100 laps so there will be a lot of luck involved.”

Moyer, Frank Heckenast Jr. and Cade Dillard will be leading their respective heat races to the green flag on Saturday ahead of the 100-lap finale.

Dillard, a World of Outlaws full-timer, isn’t a fan of the spectacle.

“I personally don’t think it’s a good idea,” Dillard said. “I don’t think this track is big enough for cars to be doing that, but if that’s what we’ve got then I guess we’re going to make the best of it.”

Chris Madden, who is currently second in World of Outlaws points, agreed with Dillard with an irked look on his face.

“The three-wide… I don’t think that’s a good thing,” Chris Madden said. “I don’t think that’s very smart. There’s a lot of late models out here.”

No matter the case, there isn’t a better group of drivers to try this out with according to a first-year driver out of Iowa.

“We’re all professionals out here,” Iowan and World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year contender Ryan Gustin said. “I’m not worried at all about it.”

Hot Laps are scheduled to kick off at 5:30 p.m. CT. As always all of the action can be seen live on DirtVision.
