Dennis Erb Jr. took the inside line on the second-to-last restart of the race during Friday’s World of Outlaws Late Model Series feature at Circle City Raceway.
Marshalltown, Iowa native Ryan Gustin ran the cushion around the outside in search of his first career World of Outlaws win. Before the caution flag flew enacting the restart, it looked like he was going to get it, too.
However, Erb Jr. was just too strong.
The driver of the No. 28 and longtime late model racer took the inside line and scooted the rear end around the corners at the Indiana bullring on his way to his seventh career win with the series.
Behind him was defending champion and points leader Brandon Sheppard, pushing Gustin back, but still on the podium during his rookie season with the tour.
Although Gustin didn’t get the win, the Iowan recorded his third top five finish in the past four races, including his second podium in the same time span. The big W hasn’t came yet, but the way Gustin is running, it could be right around the corner.
The World of Outlaws Late Models are back on Saturday night for a run at Plymouth Speedway. Its the final race in Indiana for the series ahead of its run to the Northeast that concludes with the Firecracker 100 at the end of the month at Lernerville.
