During the World of Outlaws 2020 season, the series was hard at work trying to piece together when and where it would fill in races in order to run the rest of the schedule post pandemic shutdowns.
Among those tracks that stepped up and among the marquee events that were able to stick around on the schedule was the Independence Day Spectacular at Cedar Lake Speedway.
“The track has hosted some good races,” Stenhouse Jr.-Marshall Racing driver Sheldon Haudenschild said. “To have this July 4th weekend for them is huge. Any time you can get a World of Outlaws show two races in a weekend is big for a track. Hopefully, they can keep growing it.”
Last year, for one season only, it hosted both the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars and Late Model tours – a combination event seen at a non-World Finals weekend for the first time in history.
It also marked the first major sporting event to host a 100% capacity crowd after the pandemic shutdowns in the United States.
Now, the 4th of July weekend is becoming a staple on the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series schedule.
This year, the series is coming fresh out of its Jackson Nationals weekend in Minnesota that saw Logan Schuchart and the Shark Racing team get the biggest win of its existence, collecting $53,000 between its two drivers on Sunday alone.
Schuchart has a win at Cedar Lake earlier in his career, and if Sunday could do anything for the No. 1S team, it could provide the momentum needed to get back to the top portion of the standings.
Both Schuchart and Haudenschild make up the list of World of Outlaws full-timers that have a singular win at the New Richmond, Wisconsin track.
“It’s just a good track that races well,” Haudenschild said. “I feel like every time we go there, it’s always got two lanes to race on. Even with the day race we had well it was great.”
Although, three drivers that are racing this weekend have three wins or more at Cedar Lake.
After recently picking up his 300th career World of Outlaws win, Donny Schatz will look for No. 301 this weekend. He leads the list of active drivers with five wins at the race track.
Defending series champion Brad Sweet will look to add to his series leading 10 wins on Friday and Saturday, as he’s picked up four wins at Cedar Lake during his career with the series.
Although, maybe the most intriguing story has been the resurgence of Kerry Madsen – who boasts a trio of victories at Cedar Lake.
Madsen has caught lightning in a bottle during his run this season with Tony Stewart Racing, collecting two wins at Jackson as well as 10 top five finishes in 11 races.
For a second, it looked like he’d dominate at Jackson, but at the very least Madsen has secured a spot in the No. 14 for the rest of what will be an eventful summer for the World of Outlaws.
This weekend’s action at Cedar Lake gets kicked off on Friday night. As always, all of the action can be seen live on DirtVision.com.
