It looked like it would be a two-car race with 50 laps to go.
Denny Hamlin was slowly chipping away at Joey Logano’s lead. The pair of drivers had a 13-second lead on the rest of the field and had lapped all the way up to ninth-place on the track. There had been one natural caution in nearly 800 previous laps at Richmond.
But they got one more. With 20 to go on Sunday, Kevin Harvick spun out, bringing out the yellow and sending the leaders to pit road.
Alex Bowman used the ensuing 13 laps to capture his third career NASCAR victory and his first in the Hendrick Motorsports No. 48.
Bowman’s win is the first time that Ally has officially been to victory lane as a sponsor in the sport. Jimmie Johnson – who made his debut with IndyCar on Sunday – saw his last race win come with Lowes.
However the company was on Johnson’s car when he won a qualifying race at Daytona.
Bowman becomes the eighth different winner through nine races on the tour, in what has been a topsy-turvy start to the season.
And, that might just continue.
Next Week, NASCAR heads to Talladega where madness brews 24/7. It just might turn into nine winners in the first 10.
Always Race Day will have all the coverage for the Talladega race, which will kick off at 1:00 p.m. CT on FOX.
