They call his dad “Million Dollar Bill,” but it looks like Chase Elliott will be looking for a new nickname after Wednesday.
The 24-year-old became one of the youngest drivers in NASCAR history to win the Cup Series’ All-Star Race – this one being the first held somewhere other than Charlotte Motor Speedway since 1992.
But that played into Elliot’s favor.
Even though he hadn’t yet won at Bristol Motor Speedway during his five-year career in the Cup Series, he had shown that he could perform well at the short course.
In the past, he had just been beaten out late by guys like Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch.
After the final stage break in the race, Elliott and his crew chief Alan Gustafson elected to stay out when given the option to pit, rather than come to pit road like the last time a similar decision was needed to be made.
This time, however, their choice paid off.
Elliott was just as fast as he was in the second and third stages, jumping out to a big lead and holding off Kyle Busch on the one-lane track, despite the new tires on the 18.
The NASCAR Cup Series will return to the track on Sunday when it takes to Texas Motor Speedway for a 2:00 p.m. (CT) green flag on Fox Sports 1.
