Marcus Ericsson emerges late, wins Indianapolis 500 mile race
Chip Ganassi Racing driver Marcus Ericsson (8) stands near his pit box Monday, May 23, 2022, during practice for the 106th running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Alex Palou’s ride out front in the Indianapolis 500 came to a halt as a result of an untimely caution. Scott Dixon’s hopes were dashed after he was caught speeding on pit road during his final stop. It looked like Chip Ganassi Racing might be the most unlucky team of the day in Speedway, Indiana as the red flag came out after a wreck with four laps to go.

Marcus Ericsson made sure that Chip wouldn’t have to go through that again.

Ericsson launched off of turn four coming to the final green flag of the race, weaving his way left and right and attempting to distract the air away from his competitors behind him. He held the lead through the first lap and saw Pato O’Ward coming on the outside, but again it was no match.

Ericsson slammed the door and rode around the four corners of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in route to his first career victory in the biggest pavement race in the world.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Ericsson said on NBC. “You can never take anything for granted and there was obviously a few laps to go. I was praying there wouldn’t be another yellow, but our car was amazing. I had to do everything to keep them behind. I’m so happy.”

Tony Kanaan rounded out the podium to the race in front of Felix Rosenqvist and Alexander Rossi.

Indiana native Conor Daly again led laps in the race, but fell off just a tad in the final 60 laps, coming home sixth.

Helio Castroneves’ drive for five came up six spots short, but the veteran has more races ahead of him.

The stars of the NTT IndyCar Series will return to the track on Sunday, carrying the Indianapolis 500 momentum into the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix. The race can be seen on USA Network at 2:00 p.m. CT.
