There were surprises that weren’t in Daytona 500 qualifying Wednesday night.
Alex Bowman isn’t even 30 years old yet, but on Wednesday he secured his third-career Daytona 500 pole and a record sixth appearance on the front row. He did it in his six consecutive years, too.
Motorsports superstar Travis Pastrana clinched a spot into the race on qualifying speed, doing so with no practice laps prior to making his run.
And more humbly, seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson raced his way in on speed, while Kyle Larson returned to the front row with Bowman – the second-straight year that has occured.
The four drivers are the only ones with any question marks resolved, and for a pair of them, the duels still have to be ran.
The pair of qualifying races at Daytona kick off at 6:00 p.m. CT on Fox Sports 1 Thursday night, February 16.
