Zane Smith thought he took the white flag ahead of a caution that came out late in Friday’s NASCAR Truck Series race in the tri-oval, but had it taken away from him.
The series officials ruled that the yellow, caution lights had come on prior to him taking the white flag, resulting in an overtime attempt for the field in the season opening race.
Nevetheless, the driver of the No. 38 truck still managed to get it done, coming home with his fourth career victory in the series.
“It’s something else,” Smith said on the Fox Sports 1 broadcast. “Man, this place is its own thing, I’ll tell you that. My heart literally hurt during that red flag – because I thought we had it.”
Smith took to the point on the two-lap, green-white-checkered finish and was aided by a caution NASCAR called following the young gun taking the checkered flag with his new team.
“I’m really gonna try to make this a record year for myself, but how cool is winning here and getting this Loves paint scheme back to victory lane,” Smith said.
