On Sunday, Kyle Larson won and dominated the longest NASCAR Cup Series race of the year. On Monday, he made the trek over to Lawrenceburg and then won against the top sprint car tour in the United States.
Larson, a California native, started second in the 35-lap Memorial Day Spectacular and took the lead coming to the flagstand on lap 11. He’d lead the next 25 circuits around the race track and make his second trip to victory lane in as many days.
“It’s really really cool to win that cup race last night and then come here in a totally different race car, a totally different atmosphere, and get it done,” Larson said on the DirtVision broadcast. “It shows that I’m in great equipment all around.”
Larson referenced his No. 5 Chevrolet ride with Hendrick Motorsports as well as his Rumley Late Model that has made its rounds this season so far on top of the iconic Paul Silva 57 that sat in victory lane.
The driver has made each of his team owners look rather quick as he’s expanded his racing repertoire over the past year.
However, he might have had the big screen at Lawrenceburg to thank for his victory lane trip on Monday night.
With five laps to go after what would be the final restart, Larson saw Logan Schuchart quickly approaching on the high side to his car. He adjusted his lane to run a little higher in the corner, stopping the run that Schuchart had going.
“I was able to look at the big screen and see that Logan was on me,” Larson told DirtVision.com. “I knew I needed to do something different.”
Schuchart joked about the big screen after finishing second in the race.
“I think we need to get rid of that screen down there,” Schuchart said on DirtVision. “Nah, it’s good. He’s a smart race car driver. I knew he either heard me coming or saw me because I was catching him pretty quick and he moved lines on me.”
Behind the fight out front, there was a battle going on through the field in the World of Outlaws points standings.
Brad Sweet, the current points leader and two-time defending champion, started the A-Main in dead last after a crash in his heat race for the Kasey Kahne Racing team to a backup car.
David Gravel, who trailed Sweet by 56 points coming into the night, qualified for the dash assuring himself a top 6 starting position for the main event.
While Sweet passed through the field, Gravel fell backwards and had a hard time getting by any driver on Monday night. During the caution with seven laps to go, he caught a flat tire and would be relegated to the back of the lead lap set of cars.
Instead of gaining points on Sweet, Gravel and the Big Game Motorsports No. 2 team leaves Lawrenceburg 66 points – or 33 positions on the track – behind the No. 49 team.
The pair as well as the rest of the series will get a chance to go at it again this weekend as the series goes to River Cities for the 1st Leg of the Northern Tour. The action, as always can be seen live on DirtVision.com.
Until then, Larson’s win will echo through the racing world, as the star of all disciplines won at two of the toughest of them all in the same amount of days to wrap up Memorial Day Weekend in 2021.
