Aaron Reutzel surrendered his pole position lead on the initial start of Tuesday’s race to Donny Schatz before a caution came out and swallowed up multiple cars.
It allowed Reutzel to regain the lead, as caution laps don’t count towards the race total.
From there, the No. 83 car lead all 50 laps to take the highest paying race of the season so far and earn $30,000 to the bank account.
“I think that was huge,” Reutzel said after the race. “I think honestly that was probably the race. I think if Donny gets out front there he’s going to set a pace and win the race.”
Instead, Reutzel was able to control the race and hold his lead, really only being challenged once by Schatz in the closing laps after the break with 20 laps to go.
Coming to seven to go, Brad Sweet was able to get by Schatz for second, but again had nothing for the Roth Motorsports 83.
The win for Reutzel – the current World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year favorite – is his third of the season, so far.
He got it, for the first time this season, with his wife in attendance, too.
“It’s special,” Reutzel said. “She’s been along for the ride. It’s nice that she got to see a big one.”
Now, Reutzel will be racing for an extra $100,000 during Saturday’s Jackson Nationals in Minnesota. The race already pays $50,000-to-win and a driver sweeping the pair of Showdown races gets an added bonus to his purse.
For the rest of the series, Reutzel may be a hunted man, but he didn’t think that would be the case.
“Nah,” Reutzel said. “I think it’s just going to be a normal – I think it pays 100,000 to win for me. We’re just there to do the same thing – try to win. If it don’t happen, it don’t happen, but it’s definitely a cool storyline going into it.”
The series will return to the track for the first night of the Jackson Nationals on Thursday. The show-up points only event can be seen live, as always, on DirtVision.com.
