In case anyone doubted him, last year’s late model driver of the year is still true to form as we embark on a new season for the sport.

Brandon Overton earned his first win of the year on Friday night at the Super Bowl of Racing at Golden Isles Speedway. The event marks the start of the winter speedweeks for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series.

After sweeping the Dirt Late Model Dreams at Eldora last year, Overton moved to the top of everyone’s charts in the department. It certainly looks like he can return to his winning ways this year.

Devin Moran took home second after winning the first night of the event, but his quest for the $200,000 bonus for winning all 14 of the speedweeks races – which is ridiculous in its own right – is over.

Hudson O’Neal took home the last podium spot, in a good start so far to the season as he tries to chase a championship with the series.

Other drivers weren’t so lucky, as Kyle Larson and Josh Richards each DNF’d. Larson hasn’t seen the same type of luck, but Richards was involved in a multitude of accidents during the World of Outlaws Late Model season opener last weekend.

The tour will return to the track on Saturday night for the third and final night of action at Golden Isles, before heading to Ocala, Fla. for its next stop to start the year.
