Chris Madden battled with World of Outlaws Late Model Series points leader Brandon Sheppard going into the corner just 1/4th of the way through the 60-lap feature on Saturday.
The driver of the Drydene No. 44 was putting together another solid run and was attempting to make a big pass on the defending champion that has an advantage on him in points.
Sheppard left the door open for Madden and from then on, it was all a race for second. Madden captured his second win of the season, amidst chaos going on behind him.
For 40 laps, Madden paced the field and held off the likes of Ryan Gustin, Boom Briggs, Bobby Pierce, and Sheppard.
Obviously a pair of those drivers saw trouble exiting the race early and resulting in 18th and 19th-place finishes for Pierce and Briggs, respectively.
The result for Gustin – a Marshalltown, Iowa native – is his best run of the season since joining the World of Outlaws tour for a full-time year.
He threw a slide job on the final lap to try for the late upset, but ultimately needed a couple more laps and a few more inches to get his nose in front of the 44’s.
Gustin would settle for the runner-up position in front of Sheppard, who just collected his fourth podium finish in the past seven races.
The series returns to the track for the Huey Wilcoxon Memorial on May 21, after taking an off weekend next Friday and Saturday. As always, the action can be seen live on DirtVision.
