In the biggest late model race of all time, Jonathan Davenport put down what might be his most impressive performance of his own career.
The veteran driver lapped up to fifth place during an opening, green-flag stint that lasted 80 laps – then he completed it by winning a two-lap shootout that sets him apart from other great drivers, becoming an Eldora Million champion.
“What a hell of a race,” Davenport said. “My guys gave me a hell of a race car.”
The win becomes Davenport’s sixth crown jewel and puts another trophy case on the shelf from Eldora, but this one means quite a bit more.
Eldora will host two more back-to-back nights of racing on Friday and Saturday next as the traditional crown jewel Dirt Late Model Dream is set to run on the weekend.
