The big money man is at it again.
Jonathan Davenport, the driver that conquered this summer’s Eldora Million in June, took home another $53,000 Sunday, winning the 12th running of the Silver Dollar Nationals at I-80 Speedway.
Davenport didn’t get into the lead until lap 75 of the 80-lap race, but once there, he drove away from podium finishers Tim McCreadie and Devin Moran.
“We just needed to get in traffic, really,” Davenport said. “Nothing against it, that 18 car, he’s tough to get around any time. I had trouble tonight when we caught him before and (there’s been) a couple of times I’ve lost the lead behind him. It aint nothing he’s doing wrong, these cars are so aero-dependent.”
Although Davenport’s words of the No. 18D of Daulton Wilson may have sounded harsh, he meant no malice in them.
Wilson’s ability to hold a position is what’s helped him get to where he’s at with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series this season.
“I didn’t think we were that good, really, until we got some clean air on the nose,” Davenport said. “Once we got passed the 18 it started getting clear and all that. I’d rather pass anybody in the pit area than him, but he’s one of my best friends on the road. We share a lot of information.”
Wilson currently sits eighth in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series standings going into a short break for the series. The tour returns to the track Aug. 11-13, the same week as the Knoxville Nationals, for the North/South 100 at Batesville.
