Kyle Larson takes another crown jewel in BC 39 at IMS

Kyle Larson takes another crown jewel in BC 39 at IMS
Kyle Larson rolls his No. 86 car through the turn.

He did it again, but he looked stoppable at least.

Maybe it was just the way that The Dirt Track at IMS raced, but Kyle Larson almost didn’t get the job done during Thursday’s BC 39.

Although, maybe the one big thing was that Larson won one of the most eventful races of the season.

Honoring Bryan Clauson – a driver that previously raced on a path similar to Kyle’s, jumping in every type of car available – the BC 39 was already a spectacle and it put on a show on Thursday.

Larson’s quote summed it up.

“I slid myself a few times and I shouldn’t have been doing that, but I knew Justin (Grant) was running the top in one and two there,” Larson said on the FloRacing broadcast. “I slammed the curb every time in turn 4 and then Brady (Bacon) got to my inside and then Justin was in there or something… it was just fun. Thankfully, we put a decent last lap together and snuck away with a win so I’ll take it.”

This video of the finish might do it more justice.

Larson walks away winning a crown jewel midget race just days after winning the biggest dirt race there is in the Knoxville Nationals, which he won days after getting his fifth NASCAR Cup Series win of the season, which he won a week after getting the Prairie Dirt Classic win in the late model…

You get the point.

Thursday was the most kickass edition of another string of races that Larson has gone on a tear on to win.

This one just happened to be (another) special one.

“It’s cool to win this race in honor of Bryan (Clauson),” Larson said. “This event has grown into something really big and I’m glad to be a part of it. What Doug Boles and Roger Penske and everyone does for this race track – putting a little bullring here in the infield – is pretty cool. I hope to see this event keep growing.”

Justin Grant and Brady Bacon rounded out the podium for the night on top of a trio of youth movement stars that included Ryan Timms – who just turned 15 weeks ago.

The three in Timms, Pursley, and Axsom all put on a show during the main event – a sign of times to come for the top midget tour in the nation.

With Axsom’s P5 finish on top of Buddy Kofoid and Chris Windom, the youngster climbed to second in the USAC Midget point standings.

He’s now just 20 points out of first place in Kofoid.

The series returns on September 5 to Angell Park, where the two young guns will square off and Windom will try to bounce back.
