The rest of the field didn’t make it easy on him, but Kyle Larson led the whole way in route to winning the inaugural High Limit Sprint Car Series national season opener on Tuesday at East Bay Raceway Park.
After the race was moved from Monday due to weather, Larson earned the win in the front portion of the Tuesday doubleheader.
“Traffic was definitely difficult – as soon as I could start seeing guys a straightaway in front of me, my grip went away,” Larson said on the FloRacing broadcast. “So, I don’t know if it was the small wicker bills tonight or whatever that is, but it was definitely different, so (we’ve) got to figure that out. But, all in all, a great night.”
Larson led every lap, but made a daring move to split a pair of lapped cars in Austin McCarl and Jacob Allen in the final 10 laps.
Tanner Thorson had built up an amount of momentum to close the gap and nearly got in front of Larson.
“I got kind of blocked – not blocked, but just by momentum,” Larson said in his postrace interview. “I kind of stalled out there in traffic, and I had seen Tanner’s nose in (turns) 1 and 2. I was getting nervous because Jacob (Allen) was down there and he started inching away from us and then I had seen Tanner. I had to get up on the wheel and get past it him and McCarl pretty quickly. Once I did that, I was able to get rolling again.” and mcaro pretty quickly once I did that, I was able to get kind of rolling again. So great race car.”
Cole Macedo made the pass on Thorson to take home the second spot on the podium after bouncing off of the wall in the closing seconds, coming to the checkered flag.
Night 2 of the Battle at the Bay will start shortly after the facility is turned over. As always, each High Limit race can be seen live on FloRacing.
