Kyle Larson got off to a slow start (for his standards) to the 2023 sprint car season, but mentioned his lack of races from the months leading up to the High Limit season opener.

On Wednesday, in the tour’s fifth race of the year, Larson claimed his second straight victory, winning at Tri City Speedway.

“Out of breath, but a great car,” Larson said on FloRacing. “We’ve been running really strong so far in the No. 57.”

Larson was able to get by Rico Abreu, who has been off to one of the best starts of anyone thus far on the national sprint car scene, late in the race.

“My car felt really good, we got that red — and I was kind of running through the crumbs in before that in (turns) 3 and 4. I could tell the top of 3 and 4 was getting really sketchy,” Larson said. “Parker (Price-Miller) was making mistakes up there. The red came out and I saw there was like a clean lane of grip. I figured Rico (Abreu) was going to run the top. He did and I got to his inside a couple of times thinking, ‘man, please don’t go to the bottom.’ He went to the bottom and I thought I was screwed, and he spun his tires really bad off the corner and I was able to hit the top okay there, got a good run and I was able to get by there.”

Abreu blamed mistakes for the reason he got passed by Larson, but a second-place in the field that Tri City Speedway saw Wednesday won’t sidestep his momentum this year.

“Just good racing,” Abreu said. “These guys do a phenomenal job on our car. I felt like I made a lot of mistakes at the end and you’ve got guys like Kyle and Anthony Macri, who show they’ve had speed all year.”

The series will return to the track in less than a week, taking to Eagle Raceway June 6 for a Tuesday night race live on FloRacing.
