Mike Marlar surrendered the lead to Ricky Weiss in the opening laps of Sunday’s Rumble at the Red Cedar, but once he got it back, he never looked toward the pressure.
Marlar got the lead from Weiss once the top of the race track came in a handful of laps later, feeling pressure from Marshalltown, Iowa native Ryan Gustin, but staying out front for the remainder of the race.
“I don’t know, I’ve been doing it a day or two,” Marlar said of his super late model win on DirtVision. “When (Ryan) Gustin got on the board, I saw him coming and thought, ‘Man I’d better get going.’ It was a really technical race track. I had a lot of fun driving it.”
For Gustin, it was heartbreak. The No. 19 car slowed to a stop with 12 laps remaining, putting an end to a run that slotted him ahead of World of Outlaws points leader Dennis Erb Jr. Instead, Erb Jr. took the final spot on the podium.
For the Manitoba, Canada native of Weiss, he’s seen recent success.
Although the type of track wasn’t his specialty, Weiss put his self-owned Sniper Chassis on the podium.
“It was just a little too top dominant,” Weiss said of the race track. “Great race track – they did an awesome job. That’s just not my forte. I’m just proud of my guys. We’ve been working our butts off the last few years designing these Sniper Chassis. I think we’ve really got a good piece now. The wins should just come.”
It comes just after he recorded a P6 finish in a stacked field at River Cities Speedway.
“Just consistency,” Weiss said on the broadcast. “The consistency’s back. The smiles are on everybody’s faces and we’re having fun again. When you’re doing that, the team just seems to gel and the wins will follow.”
The next time the World of Outlaws Late Model Series returns to the track, it will be in the state of Iowa at Boone Speedway in what is being tabbed as the Hawkeye 50. It’s the tour’s second annual trip to Boone and it will be broadcasted live on DirtVision.
