The last time the World of Outlaws visited Davenport Speedway for a night of racing on the 1/4th-mile configuration, they watched one of the best finishes of the year on DirtVision.
Although, when the series returns on Tuesday night, it will be with fans in the stands – which is in stark contrast to the last race at the track that saw empty seats all around.
Those fans just might see Brandon Sheppard win once again, too.
This year in the World of Outlaws, and maybe in the United States on a larger scale, Sheppard has dominated.
The driver of the No. 1 car has 10 wins and 21 top 5 finishes in the first 25 Outlaws races this year – and that was before he earned the victory in Saturday’s Silver Dollar Nationals, which is one of the biggest late model races of the year.
The stretch of success has Sheppard currently sitting 192 points – about 96 positions on the race track in the World of Outlaws – in front of Ricky Weiss.
Weiss, Manitoba native, has been lights out in his sophomore season for Scott Bloomquist Racing.
He captured his first career win early on in January and earned a second big trip to victory lane this year when both World of Outlaws tours converged for a rare combination weekend in Jackson.
Weiss had a bit of bad luck in the middle of his summer, at one time breaking down on the trip out to the track they were racing at and nearly missing the show, but has since bounced back.
He’s coming off of back-to-back podium finishes with the Outlaws as well as a top five in Saturday’s Silver Dollar Nationals.
Although Weiss seems to be more equipped for it than anyone else, its been a challenge for anyone to get the best of Sheppard.
Ricky Thornton Jr. was close in that finish in May, but ultimately was .007 seconds short.
Cade Dillard made a big run to win his first ever Firecracker 100 title this year too, but he hasn’t won on a regular feature night since.
No matter who has the chance to do it, it will be tough, but there’s a reason they run the races and we’ll see what goes down at Davenport on Tuesday.
The event is scheduled to start off with Hot laps at 6:30 p.m. CT ahead of racing beginning at 7:00. Always Race Day will have full coverage on our social media accounts.
