NASCAR on FOX analyst and former NASCAR Cup Series driver Clint Bowyer was involved in an accident Sunday June 5th.
Shortly after 9PM local time a crash was reported involving Bowyer just outside of Osage Beach, Missouri. Bowyer, headed west on U.S. 54 when he struck 47-year old Mary Jane Simmons. Simmons was walking on the ramp of Missouri highway 242.
According to the crash report, Bowyer immediately hit the brakes when the crash occurred. He called 911 and directed first responders to Simmons, reported by FOX4 out of Kansas City.
Simmons was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash report states that Bowyer had a blood alcohol content of .000 and showed zero signs of impairment. Around the area of the victim’s belongings was a crystal substance and looked to be methamphetamine. Simmons was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash. Bowyer’s vehicle sustained major driver side damage. There was also heavy damage to the windshield directly in front of the driver seat.
Bowyer was on his way home from broadcasting the Cup Series race in St. Louis. FOX Sports announced Saturday that Bowyer would not be in the booth attending to a ‘personal matter’ and missed the race in Sonoma. The FOX Sports portion of the NASCAR Cup Series completed in Sonoma.
Clint Bowyer Racing released a statement: “Anyone who knows me, knows that family is everything to me. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Mrs. Simmons. This is a very difficult time for me and my family, please respect our privacy as we move forward.”
There is an investigation underway. More information will be released when made available.
