Tuesday night in Moberly, MO is what the Summer Nationals Hell Tour is all about. A battle of attrition on a rugged racetrack.
After three of the top guys fell out of contention it was pretty clear that it was Billy Moyer Jr’s night. The Arkansas native drove to the lead early and found himself in victory lane by nights end. It was his show and everyone else was just a bystander in the dominant win.
He led early and then lost it around the midway point of the feature. A few things fell into place allowing him to regain the lead. Moyer basically dominate the second half of the A-feature in the Hell Tour Series. His team is planning to run all of week 2 with the series and he started it off with a big win on a familiar track.
The series had only ran at Moberly Motorsports Park one other time and that was in 2020. However, Moyer and a few others had raced at the track a little more recently including last year. He was excited for the track and it paid off for him.
Another thing that played into Moyer’s hand was the fact that he was back in his familiar 21J machine that he owns. Moyer had been running another car that isn’t his. That meant his own stuff had been sitting on the shelf waiting for the chance. Tuesday night it got the chance and it delivered in front of a great grandstand of fans.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing for Moyer. He led the opening few laps of the feature before being passed by Drake Troutman in lap traffic. That pass came after an early yellow flag that saw one of the night’s top contenders bow out. Ashton Winger wasn’t the cause of the caution but he ended up being the story of it. Winger went directly to the trailer after being in third moments before. A broken oil pump on lap two hindered the chances for Winger and his team.
The green flew again and it was the longest green flag stint of the night. Troutman tracked down Moyer and made his move by. He would then lead a couple of laps before he brought out our next caution. Troutman blew a right rear tire with only a handful of laps to go. Moyer then re-inherited the lead and would take it from there.
Behind him was a great battle for second with Jason Feger and Morgan Bagley. That battle soon went away after Bagley got crossed up and found himself out of the battle for the top spot. All this came with only 5 laps to go.
Moyer needed a perfect final 5 laps and perfect they were. He moved to the top side of the track and was able to hold off the hard charging Feger. Lap after lap, Moyer added more car lengths to his lead and eventually the win in the Summer Nationals Hell Tour. Feger would settle for second again in the Hell Tour, Kye Blight made a good run to third. Chad Finley and Frank Heckenast Jr. rounded out the top five.
During his post race interview, Moyer stated that the track ran like two completely different facilities. In turns one and two, he described it as “running on an asphalt track or ice rink.” Where as in three and four it had a little more character and you had to be smoother there. Overall a good surface for the first time back in over 3 years for the Summer Nationals.
Next up the Hell Tour heads to Davenport Speedway on Wednesday night.
