Much like every other national touring series, the USAC Sprint Car schedule has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Through the month of June, the series has managed to run just six races and only four since the break.
Justin Grant has won three of those.
During the streak, Grant has led 87 laps over the course of the season. The next highest driver has just 30.
It’s put himself and the TOPP Motorsports No. 4 car on top of the standings early on.
Although, we should be into a fun stretch over the next two weeks regarding that.
Aside from the shear amount of racing going on for the Independence Day weekend, the USAC sprint cars will run five races over the next two weekends including the Corn Belt Nationals at Knoxville Raceway.
Now, the Corn Belt Nats won’t be normal, points scoring events, but the two-day show saw lots of success in 2019 and the track hopes to keep it going this season.
As of right now, though, we’ll turn to watching the field try to humble Grant just a little bit.
Grant is one of just two drivers in the series to not finish outside of the top 10 in any feature race this season. The other sits 43 points behind him in the standings in Brady Bacon.
Bacon started off the year with back-to-back feature wins at Bubba Raceway Park.
Since the first race of the year, Kevin Thomas Jr. is on a similar streak. He’s collected five top 10 finishes in a row and pulled out of Indiana Midget Week early to put a focus on the sprint car program.
You don’t have to look closely to know that he wants to succeed this year.
Anton Hernandez has a commanding lead on the rookie of the year standings and is the only rookie that sits in the top 10 this season.
He’s got a 117-point cushion on the next highest driver and will continue to chase his first win in the series on Wednesday.
