Brady Bacon has been the driver to take home a large chunk of money during the annual USAC Non-Wing Sprint Car stop at Knoxville Raceway.
In 2021, the defending champ is off to another strong season.
As an Oklahoma native, Bacon has dominated the USAC Sprint Car Series and looks to keep that going through the end of the season to earn a fourth career championship this year.
Bacon currently leads the USAC tour in points going into three races for the Independence Day weekend.
The USAC Sprint Cars head to Plymouth on Thursday night – a track where Bacon has just one win in a short five race history – before going to Lincoln Park Speedway for the Bill Gardner, USAC-MSCS crossover event.
Friday night will pay appearance points only, as the night’s formats different, but the three nights will conclude on Saturday with a $7,000-to-win main event as the final race before Knoxville.
There is a plethora of talent in the series, but four drivers have separated themselves from the competition.
Behind Bacon, who has a pair of wins on the season is the duo of Justin Grant and Kevin Thomas Jr.
Sitting in second and third in the standings, respectfully, Grant and Thomas Jr. opened the season in Ocala by each grabbing a win with the tour. In the past two races, they both picked up their third and are the only drivers to do so thus far.
In a normal year, this would reflect a “Big Three” type of thing that we’ve seen in other tours in the past, but Robert Ballou’s recent surge is keeping the hinges on the door.
Ballou picked up a win at #LetsRaceTwo in Eldora to get his feet wet. Then he got the victory at Bridgeport and went on to win the USAC Eastern Storm mini-series earlier this month.
He wants to repeat what got him to a championship during the 2015 season.
Throw in Rookie of the Year contender Tanner Thorson and defending USAC Midget champion Chris Windom and there’s a multitude of heavy hitters that could take any one of these.
The action heats up starting Thursday, and its Iowa fans’ last chance to get a look at the stars before they come to Knoxville for the $20,000-to-win Corn Belt Clash on July 10, the day after the truck series race.
The Clash is the richest paying non-wing sprint car race of the season for the tour and will go down at 6:45 p.m. next Saturday.
