Going into the finale race of the 2021 edition of Sprint Week, it looked like Logan Seavey and Brady Bacon would be battling it out for the championship.
Instead, it was the driver that said ‘we’re back’ after getting a win early in the USAC Non-Wing Sprint Car season.
Kevin Thomas Jr. and his No. 9K McDonalds Dr. Pepper team came through the night and took advantage of the USAC points system to capture the championship for the week.
The system, which awards points in both time trials as well as heat races rewards consistency. It’s no surprise, then, that KTJ got the rocking chair trophy for winning Indiana Sprint Week without even winning a race.
Logan Seavey came into the race with the lead in the Sprint Week points, but couldn’t salvage his night after flipping in the second heat race.
Bacon finished eighth, but didn’t have the points cushion that Seavey had to go for the title.
The driver of the No. 69, however, does still hold the lead in the USAC Sprint Car points standings, sitting 56 points ahead of Thomas Jr., who moved up to second after a consistent week.
Stevie Sussex finished the week as the leader in Indiana Sprint Week passing points. Justin Grant, who won the race itself, remains the leader in overall passing points for the 2021 season.
The USAC Sprint Car Series will go on a bit of a break, much like a lot of the dirt world, as teams and drivers flood to Knoxville, Iowa for the 60th running of the Knoxville Nationals.
The next USAC Sprint Car race as broadcasted on FloRacing will take place at Paragon Speedway on August 22.
