There was another big late model race at Eldora and Brandon Overton came home with the win, again.
In the same year where ‘Big Sexy’ won two Dirt Late Model Dreams in a row, Overton captured his first World 100 title, winning the 51st running of the race on Thursday night at the Rossburg, Ohio facility.
“That Dream was pretty cool, but this is awesome,” Overton said on the FloRacing broadcast. “Me and (my wife) Heather used to sit up there when I couldn’t even make the race. She used to tell me, ‘Don’t worry about it, we’re going to get ’em one day.’ I’m just glad it all finally paid off, you know.”
Overton played the race strategy perfectly, stalking Ricky Thornton Jr. before passing him for the lead in the first half of the race and then getting by Dale McDowell later on off of a restart after surrendering the lead.
He ran his fastest lap in the final 10 laps of the race, driving the No. 76 to victory once again as fast as it could possibly go.
“This (car) is so damn good,” Overton said in victory lane. “I’ve got a lot of confidence in it. I can sit there and wait on them. Me and Dale have both raced in the rubber a lot. I just got my right sides in it enough to cross him over. Dale’s one of the best. I’ve followed him many times. To beat him here and for this race to play out (like it did), I can’t put it into words.”
Tim McCreadie followed up Overton in second and charged in the final moments, but couldn’t get by a lapped car to challenge Overton for the win in time for the checkered flag to fly.
McDowell rounded out the podium and Hudson O’Neal and Jonathan Davenport took the final spots in the top 5.
Hell Tour Modified champion Nick Hoffman came home in P12 and the jack of all trades in Kyle Larson finished it out P13.
The field will return to the track on Friday night, with another preliminary night scheduled before the 50th World 100 – a makeup from 2020 – scheduled to run on Saturday night at the Big E.
As always, live coverage of the action can be found on FloRacing and hot laps are scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. CT.
