Jeff Gordon to return to racing with Ray Evernham in IMSA Porsche event

Four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon is getting back in a race car.

IMSA announced Wednesday that its Porsche Carrera Cup North America series – which it sanctions – will see a special entry next weekend at its IMS Road Course event September 2-4.

The No. 24 car will be piloted by Gordon, who’s teaming up with former crew chief Ray Evernham for the first time in competition since 1999.

“I’m looking forward to getting back in a race car and competing against a talented field of teams and drivers,” Gordon said in a release. “It’s always special when I get a chance to compete at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Ray and I have always talked about running another race together, and we felt like Indy was the perfect place. It’ll be a fun way to spend the holiday weekend and make some new memories.”

Gordon’s last NASCAR start came at the end of the 2016 season, where he recorded a P6 finish while filling in for Dale Earnhardt Jr. at Martinsville.

The Indianapolis native raced in the ensuing Rolex 24, helping the Konica Minolta No. 10 team bring home the overall event win.

The Porsche Carrera Cup weekend happens at his home track, and will give fans not one, but two races to see him in a car once again. All of the action can be seen live on www.porschecarreracup.us – as well as on IMSA.com/TVLive. IMSA Radio will provide play-by-play commentary.
