McLaren F1 has bought out star driver Daniel Ricciardo’s contract which was set to end after the conclusion of the 2023 season, according to a report from the Associated Press.

Ricciardo had exercised a driver’s option to return to the team under the contract he signed when first leaving Red Bull for what he called more of a challenge.

“It’s been a privilege to be a part of the McLaren Racing family for the last two seasons,” Ricciardo said in a statement in the report, also noting that he had been in talks with McLaren for several months before agreeing to a buyout.

“I’ll be announcing my own future plans in due course but regardless of what this next chapter brings, I have no regrets and am proud of the effort and work I gave McLaren, especially the win in Monza, last season,” Ricciardo said in the report. “I’ve never been more motivated to compete and be a part of a sport that I love so much and look forward to what comes next.”

McLaren CEO Zak Brown has made waves in the racing world, promising an amount of drivers – a number greater than the amount of seats McLaren has – a spot with one of his teams.

We will have more on this story as the information becomes available.
