Kurt Busch is retiring from full-time NASCAR competition after a crash in NASCAR’s new NextGen race car left him with a concussion.
Busch announced the news on social media Saturday stating that doctors have come to the conclusion that it is best for him to ‘shut it down’ for this season.

“For more than two decades, we have been privileged to watch Kurt Busch compete,” NASCAR President Steve Phelps said in a statement. “He has proven himself a champion on the racetrack, but perhaps just as importantly, he has grown to become a true ambassador for the sport. Kurt’s drive to improve the future of motorsports has set him apart. We are thrilled that he’ll remain in our sport as a leader and trusted resource. Kurt’s unparalleled passion for racing gives us hope that we will see him in a race car again.”
Busch, who was injured in an accident in practice at a race at Pocono in July, didn’t close the door on competing in select races next season.
He stated that it would not surprise him if fans saw him at different times next season and embraces the NASCAR garage.
Tyler Reddick has been bought out of his contract with Richard Childress Racing and will be in the No. 45 car next season.
