After rain and indecision mired the start of the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix, the chaos followed to Ferrari.
Carlos Sainz was set to pit in the race as rain had let up and intermediate tires were showing faster speeds than the wets. As he was coming to pit road, his team aborted the decision, but it was too late – Sainz had came down pit lane already.
It shuffled him behind Sergio Perez in the running order and allowed the Red Bull driver to capture his first career Monaco Grand Prix victory.
Perez’ win is the third of his Formula 1 career and first of the 2022 season. He shares podium with teammate Max Verstappen.
The defending champion and series points leader extends his points lead to nine points over Charles Leclerc as well.
Formula 1 will take an off week next week before returning to action Sunday, June 12 at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Coverage is set to begin at 6:00 a.m. CT on ESPN.
