Dueling tire strategies came to a head on Sunday during Will Power’s IndyCar Series victory in Detroit.
The veteran racer was dropping between two and three seconds per lap against Alexander Rossi, who came up one second short in his efforts to take back the win on the afternoon.
Nevertheless, Power was able to save his red, soft tires that were wearing so heavily that some teams opted to only run them for the mandatory two laps the rules dictate for use.
The win for the Team Penske driver kept his streak alive, earning at least one victory every season since IndyCar merged back into one national series.
The win gives Power – the 2014 series champion – the points lead and makes him the sixth different driver to make a trip to victory lane this season in seven races so far.
IndyCar will return to the track next Sunday, June 12 for its eighth race of the season, making its annual visit to Road America. The action is set to be broadcasted on NBC with the broadcast being scheduled for 11:30 a.m. CT.
