The second to last car to take time paid off Saturday morning as Will Power dropped the hammer to takes the pole in both races at Iowa Speedway.
A race that has eluded Power his entire career, now finds him on the pole for not one but two races at Iowa. The monster run by Power saw him run an 18.060 at 178.190MPH to go to the top in the first race. Then in lap two it was an 18.079 at 178.013 to take the top spot over teammate Josef Newgarden.
“I’ve been looking forward to this qualifying session for quite a while,” Power said. “I really felt like I could make up some ground here.”
Newgarden took over the top spot from Conor Daly who went to the top of the board after 12 cars took time. From there Daly held the spot until Newgarden ran an 18.103 at 177.782MPH on lap one. Newgarden took P2 in race two with an 18.090 at 177.904MPH to bump Colton Herta off the No. 2 spot.
Pato O’Ward take the fourth spot in race one and Scott McLaughlin rounds out the top five. All three Team Penske will start in the top five.
Race two will see Daly and Takuma Sato round out the top five for Sunday’s starting lineup.
Will Power will look to win his first race at Iowa Speedway after set on the pole for the fourth and fifth time here at Iowa in his career. Power is now one pole away from tying Mario Andretti.
