Cooper Webb made a triumphant return to victory lane on Saturday, in one of the most on-brand ways possible for diehard supercross fans.
Chase Sexton, who went down during the woops section with just a pair of minutes left on the clock, surrendered the lead to Webb. It’s something that some have said is a negative to Sexton’s riding skills – the late race mistakes.
“I woke up this morning and just had a good feeling,” Webb said on the Peacock broadcast. “I just kind of rode with nothing to lose and got a great start. I knew Chase was out front and I just kind of paced him.
Sexton is coming off of a triple crown win – and knows he needs to clean things up. Even so, he’s still just two points back of Eli Tomac for the championship.
“It wasn’t just that one bad pass, I had a few that were a little bit sketchy,” Sexton said. “I was doing everything I can to keep Cooper behind me. I can’t be mad with how I rode… I’m obviously disappointed on the end of that race, but we got closer to Eli and we’re on to Oakland. Cooper rode awesome.”
“I had a big moment in the woops,” Webb said. “I saw him go down and I could kind of see him losing it.”
The series will return to the track next Saturday for a makeup race at Oakland after the originally scheduled main event was rained out earlier this season.
