Eli Tomac swept the Supercross and Motocross championships a season ago and has had one of the most illustrious careers in the sport.
However, he’d never won Anaheim 1 coming into Saturday’s season opener at Angel Stadium.
Saturday was different.
Despite a mid-race fall, Tomac had his eyes set on leader Chase Sexton.
The Honda rider had passed Malcolm Stewart, who later crashed out of the race, with a handful of minutes remaining and was poised to take home his second career win.
However, Sexton said he made three mistakes on the same lap and it led to Tomac going by and earning his first ever win in a season opener.
Cooper Webb fell back early in the race and rallied to earn a podium finish as the pair of past champions look poised to battle again.
Sexton settled for a podium finish and Dylan Ferrandis just missed out on one himself.
The series heads to Oakland for Round 2 of the season next Saturday, January 14 with a 7:00 p.m. CT broadcast start time set for Peacock.
