Tulsa, Oklahoma – For the third time in four years, Cannon McIntosh drove to a preliminary night victory on Monday at the Chili Bowl Nationals.
His right rear tire, which had been losing air in the waning moments of the race, finally went flat just after the checkered flag was waving.
His car came to a stop directly in front of where he grew up watching the same race in the stands, with the ‘top row rowdies’ right there to see.
“It wasn’t too long ago, I was up with the top row rowdies sitting with them,” McIntosh said.
The Oklahoma native and fan favorite – especially in the party-heavy section – rolled to another win in the opening preliminary night of the week by more than half a second.
Behind him, though, was California’s Shane Golobic, who powered to a P2 finish after a late-race caution by longtime Chili Bowl performer Jerry Coons, was brought out.
Golobic had to get around Chris Windom, and did so by skating the bottom of the race track to emerge from the final corner in front.
The vibes are different this year for Golobic.
Further back in the field Trey Marcham, Chase Briscoe, and 14-year old Gavan Boschele secured their spots in Saturday’s B-Main, with strong performances.
Further down, Ayrton Gennetten locked into the C-Main during his second day ever driving a midget.
The event continues on Tuesday with hot laps set for 4:00 p.m. CT and the broadcast available at FloRacing.
