Kyle Cummins took the lead for the first time in Sunday night’s USAC race on the second lap, leading 29 total circuits around Tri-State Speedway to earn the win.
Behind him, though, was a hard charging Chase Stockon that was slicing and dicing his way through the top five in the closing laps to clinch the 2020 Indiana Sprint Week title.
“I felt like they tried to screw us out of this one, but by golly we’re here,” Stockon said in victory lane on FloRacing.
Twice, during the Indiana Sprint Week race at Terre Haute was Stockon seconds away from taking the checkered flag when cautions came out forcing USAC to restart the race and add two laps on to the distance.
Stockon held the lead but was passed by Justin Grant who would go on to win, luckily, at the expense of Stockon.
The driver of the 5s got it back on Sunday, though, as he beat out Grant for the Indiana Sprint Week Championship.
“Absolutely (this takes the sting out),” Stockon said. “This race car has been bad fast all week. Every single guy over there has been working their ass off all week.”
Cummins took the victory at Tri-State, as one of the best drivers there is at the track.
He finishes fourth in the abbreviated-by-rain Indiana sprint week standings.
“I wish we could have run at our best three tracks,” Cummins said. “It would have been pretty exciting, but give it up to Chase Stockon for winning.”
The next USAC Sprint Car event is scheduled for August 22 at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.
