For a second, it looked like Tyler Courtney was going to start off his rookie season with an upset win, but settling for a podium is nothing to be ashamed of.

With 15 laps to go, Courtney got into a multi-lap battle with Donny Schatz that ended when the lapped car of Danny Dietrich came down on the No. 7BC.

Schatz ended up taking the win while Aaron Reutzel came out of the gates with a strong second-place finish and although the opening week of the year for the All-Star Circuit of Champions doesn’t pay points, Courtney being the highest full-timer in the tour doesn’t hurt.

Sheldon Haudenschild started the race on the pole and had the lead for a moment, but after being caught up in two cautions finished in 21st.

Something else notable involved the No. 18 KCP Racing car piloted by Gio Scelzi. For the first time ever, Toyota Racing supplied a sprint car engine in Scelzi’s car.

The young gun seemed to do alright with it, taking a P7 finish on the night.

Mason Daniel tied Reutzel’s field-high +5 improvement from starting-to-finishing position as the two hard chargers in the field.

The series returns to the track at Screven Motor Speedway on Saturday for Night 2 of the February Speedweek. Hot laps begin on Saturday at approximately 6:15 p.m. CT on FloRacing.
