He was one lap away from leading all 40, but Jonathan Davenport was able to dominate and take night 1 of the Wild West Shootout at Arizona Speedway.
The independent event went deep into the night with three features to be completed, but Davenport held off the best of the competition.
Ricky Thornton Jr. stayed close to the No. 49 throughout the night, getting to the back bumper of Davenport every five laps or so. Cautions allowed him to stay in the race.
Thornton Jr. even took the lead at the start/finish line with nine laps to go.
However, Davenport was just too good.
Brian Shirley rounded out the podium, but never got close enough to Thornton Jr. or Davenport to make something happen.
Bobby Pierce – who finished 19th – and Donny Schatz in P20, both were humbled by issues that brought out cautions.
The action continues on Sunday evening at Arizona Speedway, scheduled to kick off at 4:30 p.m. CT on FloRacing.
