If you thought last year’s points race was epic – it was – the World of Outlaws are putting on another good title race this season that has the potential to run right into the final weekend at the World Finals in Charlotte.
Four drivers – Brad Sweet (Leader), Logan Schuchart (-38), Donny Schatz (-70), and Sheldon Haudenschild (-150) remain separated by 150 points or less with the defending champion of the tour.
Look over towards the owner’s points and the Jason Johnson No. 41 – driven in a majority of races by David Gravel – sits at the top of the table.
The only reason Gravel isn’t leading the driver points was because of the two Outlaws Features that he missed due to his part time NASCAR Truck Series contract.
The irony of it all is that Gravel missed a race at Volusia due to the ARCA race at Daytona and then only drove in one truck race this season after the scheduled was shuffled up due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nonetheless, the race has shook out like this, and we’ll get another look at it this weekend at Port Royal Speedway.
That means it’s a big weekend for the Shark Racing 1S team.
The Pennsylvania-based team is looking for its first win with the World of Outlaws inside Pennsylvania borders since 2016.
What better time to do it than a year where Schuchart is primed to battle for the championship?
However, it’s going to depend on what Sweet will do with his NAPA Auto Parts 49 car.
The defending champ – who dominated the summer of 2019 – has shown signs of weakness throughout the season.
Between a plethora of DNF’s and sizeable winless streaks – Sweet hasn’t won since August – the team has looked off at times this year.
Although, that hasn’t stopped Sweet and co. from being the bar to clear on the tour this year.
Sweet has a series best eight wins to his name along with 33 top-5 finishes in 47 feature races this year to keep him in that top spot in the standings.
Although, it might get even harder to hold his way there as Tony Stewart Racing’s No. 15 entry piloted by Donny Schatz is looking to get back to its winning ways.
The 10-time World of Outlaws champion returned to victory lane for the 299th time in his career last weekend at the National Open.
If he can clinch victory No. 300 before the end of the season, there’s a chance he can still make a run at this one.
Of course, the Outlaws will be battling against the Pennsylvania Posse for the final time this season.
Youngsters like Freddie Rahmer and Anthony Macri have shown prowess and drive during the year, but the locals have been shut out by the Outlaws so far this season.
With only two races left inside the state’s borders, the Posse is in danger of being shutout for the first time since the 2008 season.
It all gets started on Friday Night from the place they call the Speed Palace. All the action, as always can be found on DirtVision.
