Rico Abreu set out on his first night of the 2023 410 sprint car season on Saturday at Lincoln Speedway and ended the night in victory lane.
The California native ran through a stout 46-car field during the race to beat out defending World of Outlaws champion Brad Sweet and bring home the win in the Low-E Insulation Spring Showdown finale.
“I’m just really thankful – thankful for my guys,” Abreu said on DirtVision. “They do an unbelievable job on the communication side of things and just working through things. It’s just a new learning curve for everybody being on this tire.”
The win is Abreu’s 10th career World of Outlaws victory for the West Coast star.
The race served as the first night of the series’ new tire rules that include a different Hoosier tire compound. Abreu didn’t even know about it until he got to the track.
“I didn’t even know we were changing tire compounds until tonight when I rolled into the race track,” Abreu said. “I just thought everyone was joking around when we were talking about tires.”
Despite that, Abreu looked as stout as ever, taking the lead from Sweet in the final 10 laps.
“Any time you get into victory lane with the World of Outlaws, (it’s special),” Abreu said on the broadcast. “You’re really trying to separate yourself from everybody else.”
Sweet ended up taking second, while Devon Borden captured his first career podium with the series, running third.
“It’s just super cool,” Borden said. “Like I said in the dash (draw), we’ve come a long ways. It just feels super good to be running up front with the best in the world, like it’s just really cool. I think you’re going see us get better from here. This is our year.”
