Donny Schatz was a lap and a half away from history.
The 10-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion had a multi-second lead on the field and was paced to win the 300th race of his career.
Unfortunately for him, though, his Tony Stewart Racing No. 15 Ford came up short on Sunday night.
Logan Schuchart inherited the lead after Schatz’ car came to a slow on the backstretch, screeching to a stop in the infield pit area.
Schuchart, instead, came away with the win – not to mention the early season points lead along with a streak of two podiums to kick things off.
The race got off without a hitch at Volusia following a pair of major delays to appropriately prep the track before the heat races and the feature.
Schatz took the green flag next to Cory Eliason, and Schuchart took a majority of the race to work around him and eventually take the second position with a handful of laps to go.
He just had the luck of the draw on Sunday night.
With the win and Schatz’ misfortune, Jacob Allen moves into fifth in the World of Outlaws full-timer standings, putting both Shark Racing vehicles in the top five.
David Gravel’s second-straight top five finish will move him up to third, and Brad Sweet holds the second spot thanks to his win in the season opener.
The series will return to the track on Friday as it stays to the southeast, racing at Magnolia Motor Speedway on Friday night.
