The yellow lights came on with seven laps remaining in Friday’s USAC Midget A-Main at Port City Raceway, prompting race leaders to slow down on the track.

Although, that’s easier said than done, especially with a race track that is as worn in as Port City’s was at the time of Taylor Reimer’s spin that brought out the caution.

Chase McDermand, who was chasing his first career USAC victory and leading the race, slowed in turns one and two before being ran into by USAC Midget points leader Justin Grant.

After Grant’s car got into McDermand’s, the night quickly went from something special to an angering end for the young gun.

Grant went on to capture his third USAC Midget points victory of the year, sweeping the opening trio of races this season after cancelations made other events all said and done.

He offered his apologies to McDermand after the race.

“I felt terrible with what happened there with Chase,” Grant said on FloRacing. “I slid him eight or ten times there and never hit him – I faded up behind him. They called yellow as I was fading up my slider. I don’t know if he slowed up a little bit and didn’t get all the way up to the cushion where he had been or if I just plugged him. Either way, I feel terrible about that. I feel like I crashed a guy under yellow and that certainly wasn’t my intent.”

“I can’t really say a whole lot about what happened, other than I’m sorry that it happened,” Grant continued on the broadcast. “It’s real, real glass-slick across the center there. I knew when they called yellow, I was like ‘Oh, keep going bud, keep going, because I’m coming behind you.’ You’ve got no control coming across the glass like that.”

The series is back at the track tomorrow, where McDermand will again go for his first career victory and Grant will try to make it four in a row to start the year in the books. FloRacing will have the broadcast as usual.
