Logan Schuchart found himself in a battle for the win with Carson Macedo once again, much like the battles between the two we’ve seen this season.
The No. 1S came out on top Wednesday, winning the World of Outlaws World Finals opening night at Charlotte.
“After last year, this place owes us one,” Schuchart said on DirtVision. “I feel like this Drydene No. 1S is good at this race track. I felt like I was ready to pass Carson (Macedo) in traffic, so I was a little bit bummed to see the caution.”
All of the eyes throughout the extensive evening were looking on at the points battle between David Gravel and Brad Sweet, who entered the night 16 points ahead of the Big Game Motorsports No. 2 team.
“Yeah, I’m not really racing and paying to much attention to (David Gravel),” Sweet said on DirtVision. “I don’t want to do something stupid on my end. I just didn’t think we had that speed that we had in the dash, so we’re going to head back to the drawing board.”
Sweet brought his No. 49 NAPA Auto Parts Kasey Kahne Racing car home in a podium spot, finishing P3 on the night while Gravel faded in the final three-lap shootout falling from P4 to P6.
Gravel exits the first of a trio of races this week trailing by 22 points with two races to go in the season.
“You’ve always got it in the back of your mind,” Sweet said. “You certainly can’t DNF in this situation. You do have to maybe be a little bit conservative with your tires, but I thought I was being a little more conservative with my tires and they look worse than the (top two finishers’) do.”
The night was filled with different issues for many drivers, and Sweet detailed after the race how rough the track was on tires throughout the A-Main.
“This track really grinds on these tires,” Sweet said. “My tires are completely bald. We’ve really got to think about that as we move forward throughout the week. It’s not really rubbered down, it just grinds on them. You can just see on the straightaway – it’s got a lot of wood and rock in it. It’s really just like sandpaper. Looking at my tires, I’m just happy to get the finish in my NAPA Auto Parts car tonight.”
The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series will return to action to complete the 2022 season on Friday and Saturday after taking an off-night on Thursday to prep for the final events. The World Finals will see the World of Outlaws Late Model Series and Super DirtCar Series in action on Thursday night. As always, all of the action can be seen on DirtVision.
